Virginia pedestrian struck by an alleged drunk driver

contextual

Virginia drivers are required to be in control of their vehicles at all times. Anything that takes a driver's attention off the road can cause an accident. That is just one of the reasons that a drunk driver is such a danger to himself or herself and everyone else that happens to get in the way.

This does not only include other vehicles, but pedestrians as well. Authorities suspect that a 29-year-old man was under the influence when he was operating a pickup truck in the early morning hours of March 7. A pedestrian walking along the shoulder of the road being traveled by the potentially drunk driver had the misfortune of ending up in the driver's way.

The pedestrian was struck by the pickup truck. Emergency personnel determined the victim suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident and transported him to an area hospital. The efforts of medical personnel to save the man's life were in vain -- the victim succumbed to his injuries just hours after the crash occurred.

Police took the driver of the pickup truck into custody. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence (second offense). No further information regarding the incident was released at this time.

The family of the 27-year-old victim may receive further information from Virginia authorities regarding their family member's death. If it is proven the alleged drunk driver was indeed intoxicated, that information may be used as evidence in a wrongful death action to prove negligence on the part of the driver. A successfully litigated claim could lead to an award of damages such as funeral and burial expenses in addition to any other damages allowed by our state laws.
