Tips for safe winter driving

On Behalf of | Dec 3, 2018 | Car Accidents

During the holidays, thousands of Virginia drivers take road trips to see family and friends over a few weeks. Here are some important winter driving tips to help ensure a safe journey.

First, drivers should take the time to learn about the new advanced safety technologies on their vehicles. The National Safety Council and the University of Iowa have joined together to help educate drivers on the way these systems work and encourage their proper use. For example, traction control helps vehicles maintain traction on icy, snowy or wet roadways. This can prevent drivers from spinning out when they accelerate from a stop or sliding when they go up slippery hills or inclines. This technology is now standard on most new vehicles.

Drivers can also help prevent accidents by winterizing their vehicles before bad weather strikes. They should have a mechanic check their ignition, brakes, tires, windshield wipers, battery, antifreeze level, fan belts and more to make sure they are in good working order. Safety experts also recommend that drivers stock their vehicles with emergency supplies in case they ever get stranded. These supplies should include a spare tire; shovel; tool kit; flashlight with extra batteries; compass; first aid kit; jumper cables; blankets; and nonperishable, high-energy food items, such as canned nuts, dried fruits, and protein bars. If a vehicle becomes snowbound, drivers should stay with it and light a flare. They should also tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna or place it in the window to help rescuers locate them.

Victims of winter-related car accidents may have grounds to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver who caused the crash. If successful, this type of lawsuit could help victims obtain financial compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, property loss and more.
