Common signs of drunk drivers

On Behalf of | Nov 11, 2015 | Drunk Driving Accidents

A car accident can often feel as if it came out of nowhere. People may be driving along and unexpectedly find themselves involved in a wreck. In many cases, a negligent driver is to blame for the accident. This driver may have been engaging in reckless conduct that put other people’s lives at risk.

There are, however, situations where people may be able to recognize danger on the roadway before an accident occurs. This can sometimes be the case with drunk drivers. If drivers in Virginia know what to look for, they may be able to identify a drunk driver and thereby avoid a drunk driving accident.

Experts say there are many signs that can help people identify a drunk driver. One sign of drunk driving is the driver’s erratic behavior. This behavior can include weaving across the road, driving in places other than the roadway and drifting in and out of traffic lanes. Driving in between lanes, swerving and signaling inconsistently can also indicate that a driver is under the influence.

Drunk drivers also have a difficult time controlling their speed. They may be prone to quick acceleration or unexpected deceleration. They may have trouble responding to traffic signals or following the speed limit. However, drivers are not just prone to speeding, drunk drivers may also be driving well below the speed limit.

Drunk drivers are also prone to breaking other traffic laws. They may turn illegally, they may strike another vehicle, object or the curb. And, they may drive on the wrong side of the road.

If people believe that another driver is drunk, they may need to contact the authorities. This can help to keep themselves and others safe. If a drunk driving accident does occur, people need to be aware of their legal rights. Victims may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.
