Drivers in Virginia need to be aware of a variety of factors when they are out on the road. In addition to the conventional everyday dangers that can arise, one potentially life-changing encounter can be with a drunk driver. Being hit by a drunk driver can lead to severe injuries and fatalities. Those who are affected by such an accident need to know what their legal options are.

A fatal accident that happened shortly after 11 p.m. resulted in the driver of one of the vehicles being charged with drunk driving. According to the law enforcement investigation, A Toyota 4Runner being driven by a 59-year-old woman was heading west when it went across the median of the roadway and drove against traffic in the eastbound lanes. It hit a Mercedes-Benz ML350 head-on. The driver of the Mercedes, a 40-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The two people in the Toyota were also hospitalized, but their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

With fatal drunk driving accidents, there are numerous issues that must be taken into account. First there will be the funeral expenses. Then the victim’s family will have to reconcile the loss in an emotional, practical and financial way. The victim might have been an important part of a family bringing in wages. It could have been a young person beginning his or her life, a stay-at-home parent or a cherished grandparent. No matter who it was, the unexpected loss of life by a drunk driver is a tragic occurrence. While being compensated through a legal filing will not bring the person back, it can help with the other issues that come up and assist the family in moving forward.

In this case, a woman who was driving a Mercedes was hit head-on by a Toyota that was driving against traffic. Unfortunately, she died and the woman who was driving the Toyota is now dealing with charges for driving under the influence. While the investigation is ongoing, those in the position of the woman's family can seek to protect their own interests by speaking to an attorney experienced in pursuing wrongful death cases due to drunk drivers.
