Taking care of your tires can help you avoid a car wreck

When it comes to driver safety, you probably already make it a point to wear your seatbelt and follow other traffic laws. However, there is more to driver safety than simply driving defensively and adhering to the rules of the road. Taking care of your car is very important as well. For example, regularly changing your oil can help you avoid breaking down on the side of the road in a potentially dangerous area where another car might hit you. Another important maintenance issue is taking proper care of your tires.

Your tires are one of the most important features on your car. For instance, if the tread is too worn down, the tires will not grip the road very well. This means that if you need to make a quick maneuver to avoid a wreck with another driver, you might end up losing control of your vehicle. Follow these tips to properly maintain your tires.

Rotation

In most cases, tires need a rotation every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, but you should follow the manufacturer’s suggestion for the specific tires you own. Tire rotation will help your tires wear down evenly.

New tires go on the back axle

If you need to replace one or two tires, always put the new ones on the back axle. The back tires are the ones that need to be able to get the most traction. If the rear tires are worn, you may not be able to get enough traction on wet or icy roads to avoid going into a spin.

Maintain proper tire pressure

You should not over-inflate your tires nor should you drive on them when the pressure is too low. If the pressure is lower than the manufacturer recommended level, the tires will not properly grip the road.

In addition to the above, you also need to ensure that the tread on your tires does not get too worn. You can check the depth by placing a quarter upside down in the groove. If you can see space above George Washington’s head, then it is time to replace your tires. While the above tips can help you stay safe on the road, it may not be possible to avoid every wreck. If you have suffered an injury due to a wreck with a negligent driver, you might be able to take legal action.
