Each year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance institutes a three-day campaign of ramped-up truck regulation enforcement. Known as the International Roadcheck, the event involves expanded roadside inspections across Virginia and the rest of the country.
According to the CVSA, the 2018 International Roadcheck will be held June 5-7. This year, the program will focus on hours-of-service compliance. The focus was chosen in part due to the Department of Transportation’s new mandate for electronic logging devices.
In addition to checking for hours-of-service compliance, CVSA still intends to perform full Level I inspections on the majority of trucks checked during the event. In previous years, approximately 15 commercial vehicles were inspected each minute nationwide. Last year, over 15,000 out-of-service orders were issued over the three-day period. In fact, hours-of-service violations frequently make up the bulk of out-of-service infractions each year. Enforcers inspected over 63,000 trucks and buses during the 2017 International Roadcheck. These inspections reviewed compliance issues related to both the vehicle and the driver.
Unfortunately, drivers exceeding hours-of-service recommendations risk fatigue. Statistics bear out that fatigued driving is a major cause of collisions, and sleepy truckers can cause especially severe accidents. A crash victim injured by a fatigued driver may have a claim for damages that cover medical bills, pain and suffering and lost wages.
