How to keep eyes safe at work

On Behalf of | Mar 12, 2019 | Workers' Compensation

Roughly 2,000 workers in Virginia and throughout the country experience an eye injury each day. These injuries can be caused by debris in the air or by rubbing an eye with an unclean hand, sleeve or other material. However, there are ways in which an individual can protect him or herself from such injuries. For instance, wearing goggles can prevent liquids or other items from getting into the eye itself. It can also prevent scratched corneas or similar injuries.

While it may be possible to treat some minor scratches or irritation, there could also be lingering effects. Therefore, it is recommended that a person get to an eye specialist as soon as possible. In many cases, those who go to an emergency room will find that medical staff there will get in touch with one. Going to the hospital is generally preferable to seeking advice from friends or colleagues.

One exception is if a person gets a chemical or some other substances in their eye. In such a scenario, it’s important to make use of an eyewash station before seeking further medical treatment. Employers should keep such stations in convenient locations. Furthermore, employers should ensure that goggles or other eye protection equipment fits well and is used properly. Otherwise, a worker may still be vulnerable to being hurt.

If a workplace accident leads to an injury, a worker may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits may allow a person to receive medical care both now and in the future if necessary. Those who miss work because of their injuries may be entitled to receive a portion of their lost wages as well. Anyone who has a question about their case may talk with an attorney to receive insight into how to proceed with it.
