University freshman killed in single-car accident in Virginia

College freshman in Virginia and around the country typically have their entire lives before them. As they begin their college careers, their primary concerns are often class schedules, studying and having some fun. The prospect of dying in an accident rarely, if ever, crosses their minds. Even so, thousands of college students die each year in auto accidents caused by a variety of reasons, including distracted driving and impairment.

Unfortunately, an 18-year-old Liberty University freshman that barely began his college life died in a single-car accident on Saturday, Dec. 7. The driver of the car in which he was a passenger lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway for an as yet unknown reason. The car came to a stop only after slamming into a tree.

According to the Virginia State Police, the young man died in the collision. The driver, a fellow member of the LU track team, and her brother suffered unknown injuries. Emergency personnel transported them to an area hospital. Their current medical conditions were not reported. Authorities charged the 20-year-old woman with reckless driving.

When such a young loved one dies, family members understandably grieve for the loss of their loved one and for the fact that the victim will never be able to enjoy future family gatherings and life experiences. No amount of money can rectify the situation, but it may help recover monies the family expended because of their loss. Under our state laws, damages may be awarded to a family that proves negligence on the part of a driver in a car accident.
